HOW TO START A BLOG

So you finally decided to launch a blog! Congratulations. It’s never too late to start one. I think that having a blog is still important because social media apps come and go but a website won’t go anywhere unless you decide to shut it down yourself.

Anyway, let’s jump right in!

You can do the following steps in just a day or two. It’s simple at first especially if you’re on a budget. Don’t need to shell out loads of money if you’re just starting. All you need is dedication, effort, and time to maintain your blog.

Today, we will cover the following:

  1. NICHE
  2. BLOG TITLE, DOMAIN NAME
  3. PLATFORM (HOSTING or FREE)
  4. BRANDING & DESIGN
  5. SOCIAL MEDIA
  6. CONTENT CREATION

I. CHOOSING A NICHE: General vs. Specific

It’s important to focus on a topic instead of writing different contents at the same time. Choose something that interests you and something you’re knowledgeable about. It’s hard to write something you do not have any idea at all, right?

TIPS:

Often times, you will read from other blogs that you NEED to be specific. I say this would take time so you do not need to force yourself right away in being too specific.

You may start with a general topic first then go from there.

II. BLOG NAME (and Domain Name; optional)

Either you go with the easiest or get a bit creative. Easiest would be your name. This is okay if you have a few letters to your name. Most likely you will get a domain name a bit faster as it is not yet taken.

TIPS:

Now, you don’t necessarily have to pay for the domain and just settle (for now) for free blog hosting such as wordpress.com or blogger.com This is very easy to set up.

If you have a little budget, then you may have your own website, a digital space that is your own.

TIPS:

I started with Blogger, then wordpress.com, then eventually moved to paid hosting using wordpress.org and currently hosting my site thru Siteground. (https://www.siteground.com/go/camilleolaguivel)

PS. You do not need a lot of money or spend a dime if you can’t. More important is you create good content and be consistent.

III. WEB HOSTING

You may skip this if you cannot afford it yet but if you do, then this is one of the things you’d like to invest in.

This is going to be your first investment. Having a self-hosted blog  is essential especially if you want to eventually make money from it. This will make your blog more professional (though there are some blogs that are making money even though their blog is not self-hosted)

Blogger, wordpress.com, and other free sites are okay but when you have your own, all content and data will be yours and if those platforms decide to shutdown, then you will have no choice.

I personally recommend Siteground

(I tried other web hosting services before but was not happy therefore I ended up switching).

Few things that I love about Siteground are:

IV. BRANDING & DESIGN

BRANDING

We all know how visual is very important in this digital era. Ever wondered how we get attracted to a brand’s aesthetic and design? Just like with your blog, you need to decide on a few things to make it stand-out or attractive.

TIPS:

BLOG DESIGN

I tried designing my own back in the early days, boy it was really hard and I came to terms that I am not good at it. So I purchased a pre-made blog template.

If you’re like me you either can:

  1. Buy a premade design theme
  2. Have a customized blog design (This can be a bit expensive so you can save this for later if you finally can)

There are online entrepreneurs that offer free templates that you may want to try first and if you are happy with the design and can finally upgrade to a paid one, then you can buy from them.

TIPS:

V. SOCIAL MEDIA

One can’t deny the power of social media nowadays. You need certain platforms to advertise/showcase your blog. You do not have to make an account for all social media apps out there.

For starters, I think you need:

These will help in generating engagement and possible potential readers come to your blog.

VI. CONTENT CREATION

Remember what I mentioned in the first part of this post? I suggest writing at least 3-5 blog posts and schedule it depending on how you can commit in posting. Once a week isn’t so bad. You may try that first.

TIPS:

I Think we’re all set now! Welcome to the blogger’s club!
